CHAPTER TWELVE

Unable to sit and do nothing, Raina wrapped herself in two layers of thermal gear which, according to the ad-vid, was designed to wick moisture from her body while keeping her toasty warm. Right. Like she ever felt warm here in the subzero zone. She closed the zip-seam on her insulated joggers, focused her thoughts on a workout, and left the rig.

An inky, star-flecked saucer of sky hung over the camp. Legs pumping, arms moving in synchronized rhythm, she began to run. Three laps, five. Now her mind was emptying, the emotions she didn’t want to deal with fading away as the physical sensation of working her muscles took over. She forced herself to think of nothing but the smooth flow of her limbs as she ran, let herself forget time and place.

Made herself forget the man who haunted her every thought.

One more lap, she told herself, even though she’d told herself the exact same thing five laps ago. Maybe if she worked herself to the point of complete physical exhaustion she’d be able to exorcise the weird bug that had taken over her rational thought processes and made her jealous to the point of actual pain.

As she rounded a corner, she saw Wizard and Yuriko from a distance. They walked the perimeter of the camp, heads bent close, joined in whispered conversation. Whatever they discussed, Raina wasn’t privy to it, and a cold blade of resentment sliced through her. Yuriko and Wizard shared history. The aura of tension that hovered about them like a swarm of nasty little blackflies in the spring gave it away. Forcing herself to keep moving, she ran on, aware of Wizard turning slowly as she passed, his eyes locked on her.

She meant to just run. She meant to ignore him, to not turn her head even the tiniest bit. But she betrayed herself, her gaze sliding to his. She lost her breath as she saw her own hot need mirrored in his expression.

What the hell? He was walking with one woman, lusting after another: her. And absolute idiot that she was, she felt glad that he’d stopped midconversation and turned to follow her movements with harsh yearning etched on his face.

Then she felt guilty because she didn’t want to hurt Yuriko.

She sighed. She wanted Wizard in the worst way, but that wasn’t the problem. The problem was that she’d missed him. Missed talking to him. Missed seeing the tiny hint of a smile that she managed to drag out of him. If she just wanted him in the physical sense, she could see her way clear to spending one raunchy night in his arms and then leaving without a backward glance.

Yeah, she wanted to jump him, but she wanted to just be with him too. The thing was, she couldn’t bring herself to strut into Yuriko’s territory to take him. The first real friend she’d ever had, and the woman just had to have a prior claim on the man Raina wanted.

Frowning, she
